To generate an actionable strategy that enables Austin Public Health to modernize their infrastructure to better protect their residents from diseases, ISF deployed an evidence-based approach to assessing APH’s current environment, identifying capacities and opportunities, and developing practical recommendations for an enhanced future state. ISF working diligently with APH stakeholders to ensure alignment of priorities and successful realization of APH’s business needs.

ISF commenced the analysis through facilitated strategic visioning sessions with APH executives to identify pertinent desired outcomes and define concrete objectives for the future plan. ISF then facilitated interviews with division stakeholders to break down core business needs and identify major initiatives that support accomplishment of the objectives. To assess the current environment and against the future needs, ISF implemented a structured methodology based on decades of experience and industry principles, including performing a data governance maturity assessment and a gap analysis. ISF thoroughly documented findings from the assessment to provide a detailed understanding of the organization’s landscape, where gaps need to be addressed, opportunities to further enhance their infrastructure, and capacity for change to carry the organization forward. A thorough approach to strategic planning with a comprehensive understanding of the current landscape ensures that the future plan is feasible for the organization and provides for a more informed roadmap to get to the desired future state. To ensure APH’s ability to accomplish their mission, ISF developed dedicated strategies across discipline areas followed by actionable plans.

The outputs of this effort included:

  • An overall business strategy for APH,
  • A data strategy encompassing people, process and technology,
  • A report on capacity, gaps, and opportunities,
  • A strategic plan with SMART objectives for achieving business needs,
  • An implementation plan for the infrastructure needs to support the strategic plans, and
  • An implementation plan for the workforce needs to support the strategic plans.

Impact and Outcomes

ISFs efforts enhanced stakeholder alignment across the many divisions at APH, provided insight into APH’s current landscape, and ultimately enabled the organization to move forward towards modernizing their organization and better serving the community of Austin.
